How do you buy a domain name?

To buy a domain name, you first decide on a short, memorable name and run a domain lookup at a registrar. If the name is available, you pick the right extension, enter the registration details in your own name and complete the payment. Then you secure ownership by turning on auto-renewal, the transfer lock and two-step verification.

What Is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your address on the internet: the yourcompany.com a visitor types into the browser. Behind the scenes every site runs on an IP address; the domain name links that numeric address to a name people can remember. This link is set up with DNS records.

You do not buy a domain name, you rent it. Registration is usually made for periods of one to ten years and must be renewed before it expires. A domain that is not renewed opens for registration again after a certain grace period and can be taken by someone else.

A domain name on its own is not a website. The site's files sit on hosting; the domain name only directs visitors there. We explain this relationship in detail in our What is DNS article.

How Do You Choose a Good Domain Name?

A domain name will be used for years on business cards, vehicle wraps, invoices and email addresses. Changing it later is possible but troublesome and costly, so take your time with the choice.

  • Short and easy to say: it should be spelled correctly on the first try when said over the phone.
  • Consistent with your brand name: it should reflect your company name or your well-known brand.
  • Special characters: names with characters such as ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü can be registered technically but may cause problems in email and sharing; prefer the Latin-letter version.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible; they cause confusion when spoken aloud.
  • Do not register a domain that contains another brand's trademarked name; it creates a risk of legal dispute.
  • Consider also registering common misspellings and other extensions; you protect them by redirecting to the main address.

.com or .com.tr?

The choice of extension depends on your target audience and growth plans. Both are reliable and widely used extensions; for most businesses the healthiest path is to register both and make one the main address.

About com.tr Domain Names

Domain names with the .tr extension are allocated through TRABİS by authorized registrars. With the move to the new system, the document requirement that used to apply to a com.tr domain has largely been lifted; verification is done with identity or tax details during registration. Since conditions may change over time, check the current rules at TRABİS.

Does the Extension Affect SEO?

Country extensions (such as .tr) signal to search engines which country a site targets, while generic extensions such as .com are neutral on country. But what really determines rankings is content, technical infrastructure and user experience; we address these in our SEO and analytics work.

Domain Lookup and Registration Steps

Buying a domain takes a few minutes. When choosing a registrar, look not only at the first-year price but also at the renewal price, ease of use of the control panel and quality of support.

  1. Search for the name and extensions you want on the registrar's website.
  2. If the name is available, add it to the cart; consider other related extensions too.
  3. Choose the registration period; a longer registration reduces the risk of forgetting.
  4. Enter your company's or your own name in the registrant details; do not register in the name of an agency or an employee.
  5. Enter a business email address you use continuously; transfer and renewal notices will arrive there.
  6. Complete the payment and keep the registration confirmation email.
  7. Set the nameserver settings according to your hosting or DNS provider.

Looking Up a Name That Is Already Taken

If the name you want is taken, you can see the expiry date with a WHOIS lookup; in many records personal details are hidden for privacy. Short, valuable names occasionally go on sale on the secondary market; in that case, make the purchase through a safe intermediary (an escrow service).

What Determines Domain Name Prices?

Domain prices vary by extension, registrar and registration period. Quoting a fixed amount would be misleading; when comparing offers, pay attention to the items below.

  • Extension: each extension's registry sets a different fee; some new extensions are quite expensive.
  • Renewal price: a promotional first-year price can rise noticeably in later years.
  • Premium names: short, meaningful or highly searched names can sell far above the standard price.
  • Extra services: WHOIS privacy, DNS management and email forwarding are included by some registrars and charged by others.
  • Transfer fee: moving a domain to another registrar usually costs a one-year renewal fee.

How Do You Protect Ownership?

Losing a domain is one of the digital problems businesses run into most often, yet one of the easiest to prevent. A missed renewal date, a registration made in a former employee's name, or a hijacked control panel account can take your site and email down overnight.

  • Turn on auto-renewal and keep track of the registered card's expiry date.
  • Keep the transfer lock (registrar lock) on; turn it off only when you are about to transfer.
  • Enable two-step verification on your registrar account.
  • Check once a year that the registrant and contact email are up to date.
  • Do not share the EPP/authorization code needed for a transfer with anyone by email.
  • If your agency manages the domain for you, get written confirmation that you are the registrant.

After You Buy a Domain Name

A domain name means nothing on its own; its value comes from the site and email built on it. As a first step you can set up a business email with your domain, then publish a corporate website that explains your business.

For email you need to add MX, SPF and verification records; you can find the steps in the business email setup guide. If the site is not ready yet, rather than leaving the domain empty, publishing a temporary one-page intro with your contact details gives confidence to customers checking your address.

If you plan to sell online, think about the domain together with your store brand; on an e-commerce site, the domain is one of the trust signals a customer sees while paying. If you are not sure where to start, you can look at our web design process.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Should I buy the domain from my hosting company?

Not necessarily. Getting the domain and hosting from the same company makes management easier; keeping them with separate companies lets you switch hosting without affecting the domain. Whichever you choose, what matters is that you are the registrant.

02What happens if a domain expires?

When it expires, the site and email usually stop working within a short time. Depending on the extension, you can renew within a grace period, sometimes for an extra fee. If that period passes too, the domain is released and can be registered by someone else.

03Is it necessary to buy more than one extension?

It is not required, but buying core extensions such as .com and .com.tr together is a common practice for protecting your brand. If you connect the extra extensions to your main address with a permanent (301) redirect, visitors reach the right site whichever address they type.

The right domain name is short, matches your brand and is registered entirely in your name; your target market decides the choice of extension.
